Geneva gets two entries because this state park was absolutely beautiful. Just a bit west of Geneva on the Lake is a state park with all the amenties including a beach on the lake. We went swimming for a bit and as we were leaving the beach area we were discussing possibly coming back for the sunset. An older couple sitting there told us that the sunsets on the lake were some of the best that they had seen, even "better than the Carribean" as they put it. So we decided we would need to come back. I took a few shots, including the one above as the sun began to set but for this day I tried my hand at doing a bit of video. I will try and upload a clip of the sun moving into the ocean soon, and then you can decide for yourself on the quality of the set over the lake! I will say this, the sun seemed to linger on the horizon for a very long time! It was great!

I drove up north past our would be campsite into a little town on Lake Erie named Geneva on the Lake. Here there was a festival of Wine going on and the very touristy town was abuzz with people all walking along the main road enjoying themselves. At the end of the road was the cities park. I decided to walk into the park and do some reading. This park was great with benches of red, white, and blue a flag proudly flown in the middle of the park with people enjoying the warm summer day near the beautiful lake.

I stopped at this state park because I thought this was where we would be camping for the night. After a day of trying to find a place to plug in and get some work done with no luck and no internet I decided I would head to the camp site and just do some reading. After nearly missing the turn off and speeding into the parking area, I was there, looking into a very dense unkempt park. I thought to myself that it would get better and if nothing else I would get to sit next to the river and read for a bit. Turns out I was wrong on both accounts. The trails were so overrun that sometimes you weren't sure if you were even still on a trail, mosquitos pretty much ate me alive and there was no river access. Oh and did I mention the bridge surrounded by caution tape! Though this was not an ideal trail and without bug spray I would be bloodless in 15 minutes I felt like I was traversing through a forest and it was definitely an adventure! The thing that made the expedition through evil turkey park was that while walking fox run path and met the owner of the trail, a furry fox not more than 5 feet away. I asked if I could pet him but he just ran off, that was the point in which I was afraid the park was making me go insane, and so it was time to head out. I found this lone building being reclaimed by the surrounding foliage just before exiting the park. I thought it a fitting tribute to a park with no maintenance.

So our good friend Lance, decided to come up and visit us along the trail bringing Scott back onto the trip and staying for a few days. During his time here we were passing through Illinois and so we decided to drive into the city and walk around for a bit. What a great city, there are so many people it's craziness all the time! We were driving around trying to find a place to park and stumbled through this area where they had, at least it seemed, just recently build these apartment. Looking up the sun was hitting the giant buildings, which were faithful to reflect the suns radience as well is the surrounding buildings. I hope you enjoy the shot!

So it looks like I may have lost a couple of my media cards along the way holding my photos from middle Montana to Wisconsin! Unfortunately that means I'll have a bit of a gap in the trip in terms of photography. Perhaps I'll have another chance to visit these areas and capture some of the scenery. This shot was taken at a farmstead in Richland Center. A young couple who lives on this land graciously hosted us for a meal and a place to sleep as we passed through. This was the first time I had experienced the use of a website called warmshowers.com. Apparently there are people all over the nation who are hospitable enough to open their doors to people in return for some company and some good stories. It was a blast! They cooked us a hot meal, bratwursts over a campfire, and we were able to hear about some of their adventures on the bike.

So i don't remember exactly where this shot was taken but it was somewhere in Montana along Highway 2 heading East, before Missoula. It had been raining on me since I left the coast of Oregon and so I was looking forward to that stopping and this was just at the end of the storm. Off the highway I saw this abandoned mine, At first I was going to just pass it by as I was pretty focused at this point in making good time to catch the guys who were still about a day or so ahead. I decided to double back though and grab a couple shots. I'm glad I did. This shot came out a bit soft but I think perhaps it gives the image a more ethereal feel. What do you think?

After waking up at a rest area, I was pleasantly greeted by the silence of my engine due to a dead battery. This was an interesting way for me to say good morning to the canadian couple who, luckily, were awakening at the same time. After finding some jumper cables and unsuccessfully jumping my car, I remembered that Lance had given me his car jumper battery pack to use on the trip. This worked flawlessly and I was off. As I drove through the Dalles The morning fog was floating along the cliffs, I was hoping to get a shot of that but alas I could not find a location in time so this shot of what the cliffs looked like will have to suffice. After shooting this is the point in the drive where I decide it's a good idea to turn off my car (maybe 30 min after it had just been dead). This, as you can imagine, was not a good idea. Lance (in spirit) is there to save the day again with the battery pack. That is when I decide it's probably time to buy a new battery.

When I was at the Lighthouse in Point Reyes, I met a guy who was from Portland. He recommended that I make a stop at the Haystack Rocks on the Northern coast of Oregon to take a few shots. These are seen in many photographs and it's quite a popular photographic spot... except for when I went. By the time I made it to the coast it was starting to get a bit dark, not to mention that it was freezing and raining. Not the best conditions to photograph this great location but it allowed me to test out my waterproof camera case! [disclaimer: they are glorified wal-mart bags; they do the job!). The drive back East was quite a bit more exciting as it began to rain even harder and I was driving along a very forested area of Oregon through another long and winding road. It was awesome, and then I almost hit a deer. He was just chillin in the middle of the road out on a bridge. Crazy little guy. At this point I'm really looking forward to catching up with the guys who are out in Montana, but it was pretty late, so I made it just past Portland before crashing at a rest stop for the night.

As I drove along Highway 1 North from San Fran I increasing realized how good of a decision it was to not go after the tourist spots for a picture of the Golden Gate Bridge. Though the bridge is a great Gods amazing creation is quite a bit better. This portion of the drive was incredibly beautiful... Winding roads through hills and forests, the coast a stone throws from the highway and the sun setting over the ocean. Not even my gas tank approaching empty with no sign of a gas station could ruin the magnificent beauty. I finally approached Point Reyes Station where I saw a sign for a lighthouse. I hoped there would be a gas station here for a couple reason, 1. I wanted to visit the lighthouse and 2. I needed gasoline as I would be empty, very very soon. Now that I was filled up I could continue on to the lighthouse. Turns out the lighthouse is a ways out, but oh so worth the drive. As you go through the California country side, there are historical Ranches that pepper the sides of the roads. These ranches are still operational and have been since early to mid 1800's. So, now we have, winding roads leading through a hilly country side with grazing cows and old country ranches with the sun setting over a sparkling ocean. You should definitely visit here if you are ever in California!
